Said about Terminology as an alternative
I switched from terminator to terminology because terminator can bug when you have many windows. In fact, Terminology can also bug when you have many windows, but the treshold is much higher. However, terminology is very good alternative.
Split screen, works well even under desktops/window managers it wasn't designed for (e.g. i3).
