Tandem Commander is a fast, keyboard-friendly two-panel file manager for Windows 11. It is based on Open Salamander, the open-source release of the long-lived Altap Salamander (formerly Servant Salamander), and continues its development: the familiar look, speed and keyboard-first workflow stay, while long-standing limitations of the original are being removed.
What is different from the original Salamander:
- File names, passwords and typed text in any script (Unicode) work throughout the program and its plugins
- Archives and folders at very long paths can be opened
- RAR archives open and unpack without installing anything, on a current 7-Zip engine
- 64-bit, code-signed installer; also available through winget (winget install tandemcommander)
- Notifies you when a newer version is published (can be turned off)
Included plugins:
- Archives: ZIP, 7z, RAR (unpack), TAR, CAB, ISO
- Network: FTP and SFTP clients
- Viewers: images, Markdown, source code, databases, executable (PE) files
- Tools: file comparison, batch rename, checksums, disk map, undelete, registry editor, portable devices
Tandem Commander has no accounts, telemetry, analytics or advertising. It uses the network only when you ask it to, with one exception: a once-a-day check for a new version, which sends nothing about you or your computer.
The user interface is available in English, Czech, German, French, Dutch, Hungarian, Romanian, Slovak and Spanish. Tandem Commander is free and open-source software licensed under GPLv2; plugins written for Open Salamander's plugin interface keep working.
