For me, Altap Salamander is the one I can work with best among all the Explorer alternatives I have tested. For example, I have tried FreeCommander and Double Commander as alternatives, but have always returned to Altap Salamander.
The reasons why I am looking for alternatives are:
- it does not cope with Unicode.
- it does not seem to be developed any further.
I would like to see other explorers follow Altap Salamander's usability.

Whee! Middle toolbar! At last. The interface is not as slick as Dopus though. Integrated SSH/SCP support in the 32 bit version.

Comments and Reviews
Altap Salamander is the most consistent and practical application I have ever worked with. It is always open on my desktop.
It has clean, uncluttered graphical interface. Almost every aspect of UI and behavior can be customized.
It has a set of very useful plugins, some of which I use very often: Text Viewer, Database Viewer, PictView (which can make a Screen Capture), Batch File Renamer; or from time to time: Disk Map, File Undelete and others.
The only drawback I experience is the lack of unicode support in Text Viewer, though Database Viewer supports unicode.
All in all, I like this application very much.

Performance and RAM usage are very good. Lots of advanced features for being free. All good. 😀
But ..
No tree view, no bookmarks or Favorites, no multi-tab bar. 😧
In terms of basic navigation, this is a huge downside. Imagine that you are a user who has to go back and forth between a lot of folders. You can't pin as a tab, nor can you bookmark it. Only double panels should solve this problem. Or you'll have to search the forums for a while for possible special plugins and difficult-to-use procedures.
I may not be able to find the basic navigation features I mentioned above. But that just proves that the UX is a mess. I spent enough time looking for those features. If I'm wrong, please point it out in a reply.

I find the WinMerge option confusing. It seems to work sometimes, but not all the times
I'm still searching for a viable alternative to Altap Salamander on Mac.
