A few of us are aware that Snappy Driver Installer is now in the hands of less than honest devs.
I wish I could say that I didn't see this coming.
Snappy Driver Installer Origin is clean, I've used it several times before sharing here.
Drivers are a PITA, and SDI has been a godsend for me personally. Let's support the new dev and project as best we can.
I've been testing driver update programs since 2015 - IOBit, Snappy, SlimDrivers, DriverMax, Unknown Device Identifier, etc. None of them - not even Snappy Driver Installer - are perfect. Always be wary of driver installation programs. For 99% success, just download the driver from the manufacturer's website, such as for your motherboard.
On the bright side, Snappy makes it very easy to visualize all hardware data and compare it to the driver it recommends so you can decide for yourself if you want to install it. And if you do, make sure you always check the "Create a Restore Point" box before installing.
In many cases you can simply install everything it recommends without a hitch. In some cases this will break your computer and require you to do a system restore, so be wary.
Snappy's UI is clunkier than the prettier IOBit, and it's process isn't entirely clear until you get used to it. The simplest procedure is to download the INDEXES first. This will cause the program to show you all relevant drivers. You don't need to install all the other Driver Packs. The program also uses torrents for downloading which is very convenient and future-proof, for the most part.
Told me I needed numerous drivers but that they weren't in the driver packs.
simple, clean and capable driver installer. it uses driverpack solutions packages. first install driver database to find apropriate drivers, then download multi driver packages then install. size may look big but it only uses suitable ones and deletable in program folder. if you install multiple pcs same time, prepare a usb with program folder.
Never know my PC has this many drivers to update. I'm glad I discovered it.
I have been using Snappy for many years now and probably the Driverpacks for longer than I think. Snappy is a great tool and probably one of the best driver updater programs out there. Not only Free but also Open source. When recently I saw it accompanied by the word Origin, it brought me a strange dejavous of what happened with ublock. It is good to see that programs like this are loved and kept clean and safe by the community.
Either way, having said that, Snappy, like GregariousJB mentioned, even if it is very helpful and useful a lot of times, it is always better to use manufacturer's drivers, as a lot of times those are tailored to work better with your system.
The greatest usefulness comes when you can't find fitting drivers for one reason or another, usually because the system you are trying to set up is older. But still even if it can correctly detect drivers, sometimes their compatibility might be bad from making the system work worse to the point of not even being able to boot up.
For what it is worth, I still prefer this over other driver updaters, but honestly I would not readily suggest it to people that just want to use it for their own system. The main reason is that unlike other Driver Updater tools, this ones downloads DriverPacks, which can be quite large to download, paired with the fact the download speed through the program is slow, it can make using this cumbersome. But as a tool to have already predownloaded and used through either a large 32+ usb thumbdrive or external sdd/hdd, this is great, at you can have it at all times with you when you want to fix something, not even needing internet.
Again, this is great for older systems, especially with outdated operating systems, although since Windows 10, there has been less of a need to worry about drivers, as Windows 10 can do that themselves.
I used Snappy Driver Installer Origin and it founded 8 updates available for my computer. Everything gone well, no problem at the moment, but I don't like the UI. It feels weird and outdated...
