What is Quoll Writer?
Quoll Writer's interface is focused on what matters, your words. Controls are where you would expect them to be. It employs a familiar tabbed interface to allow you to work on multiple chapters and assets at once.
Just like the real world, the world you create is full of characters, locations and items, Quoll Writer lets you easily create and manage those assets.
Remembering what happened when, where and between whom is problematic when you're 50,000 words into a story you've been working on for months. Quoll Writer allows you to annotate the text with plot outline items for key story points and scenes for structure.
We all have phrases and constructs that we use and wish we didn't. The problem finder can help improve the quality of your writing but it is there to help not instruct.
As you would expect Quoll Writer has a built in spell checker, it can be turned on or off in a single click.
More is not always better but knowing how much is vital. At the click of a button you can find out how many words your story has and how much you have written in the current session.
The Idea Board allows you to quickly record and organize your ideas. You can add new types of ideas, rate ideas, sort them and convert them into assets or chapters.
We all need to practice our writing (well nearly all of us), a warm-up can help you limber up before you start on your current project or just with practice. Do you have writer's block? Do you want some new ideas? A warm-up will help and with nearly 300 prompts to choose from there is sure to be something for everyone.
No one wants to be distracted when writing and let's face it computers are a veritable pandora's box of distractions. Quoll Writer's full screen mode, accessible at the touch of a button, will help keep you focused and on track.
To make getting started easier Quoll Writer supports importing your existing projects from Microsoft docx files. Export your project to docx, html, epub and pdf formats.

Comments and Reviews
Open source, powerful, stays out of your way. It has a lot of great built-in tools that are there when you need them (like the problem finder), but it doesn't overwhelm you with its power. If you just need a distraction-free environment, it can do that, too. Full screen, customizable, just how you like it.
Surprised it isn't more popular to be honest.
QuollWriter is the right tool for authors who aim to write large works (for short stories etc. it is too overloaded).
Anyway, there are too many disadvantages for me:
I can’t find text formattings for Headings, just for bold, italic and underlined passages or words. No Markdown support, but that does not matter much. More important: I can’t find a way to export my stuff to TXT, PDF, DOCX or whatever. And everything seems to be saved to a database instead to files, which is a no-go in my opinion.
From their Download page: "There is currently no version of Quoll Writer for Mac or Linux. To do either will take some changes, potentially large ones for Mac (Mac OSX is positively hostile towards tabbed interfaces) and Java look-n-feel implementations on Linux leave quite a lot to be desired. It is possible to do both but I'm only going to do so if there is a real demand, so speak up and let me know."
In 2024, version 3 is available for Windows, macOS and Linux.
MacOS and Linux versions are in beta phase with version 3.0
This writer is the one of the best alternative to Scrivener. I also advice you to try Obsidian but you must build a writing structure for Chapters, characters etc.
