What is Notch Studio?

Notch (listed on AlternativeTo as "Notch Studio" to avoid a name clash with the motion-graphics engine) is a native screen recorder and editor for macOS and Windows — fully free for personal use, with a one-time Commercial license for paid or business work. No subscription, no sign-up, no account, no cloud, no telemetry. Recordings stay on your machine.

The recorder captures screen, window, microphone, system audio, and webcam in a single setup. The editor lives in the same app: auto-zoom that follows the cursor without keyframing; custom styled cursors that replace the OS cursor in your recording with five click animation styles, tap-rebound on click, smoothing, and fade-when-still; keystroke overlays; annotations with timeline-based animations; 50+ background templates; webcam overlay with nine positions and mirror toggle; trim and speed control (0.25x to 2x); background music with per-track mixing; and export to MP4 (H.264, H.265, VP9, AV1) up to 4K, or GIF.

The feature that sets Notch apart from other screen recorders is segment recording. Instead of forcing a single-take workflow, the recorder lets you stop, re-record any chunk, reorder segments, cut mistakes from any clip, and combine everything with transitions — all without leaving the app or opening a separate video editor. No more restarting a 10-minute lesson because of one stumble.

Multilingual captions are a first-class workflow. Add captions in any language, ship either burned-in subtitles or a standalone SRT file, and reuse the same recording for multiple locales.

The free tier exports without a watermark from us, with no project cap and no time limit. The Commercial license is a one-time purchase (no recurring fees) and unlocks your own logo as a watermark for paid or business use. Future updates included.

Built for course creators, tutorial makers, DevRel folks, product demos, and anyone shipping localized video content.
