Kaint is an open-source raster image editor that aims to bring Paint.NET’s look, functions and user experience to desktop environments. It is written using C++20 and Qt 6, meant to operate on Wayland and KDE Plasma but it can also be used in Windows 10 and 11.

What is Kaint?

This application offers Paint.NET features and functionality: selection with combine modes, pixel or selection moves, e.g. Classes, Rotation, Journalism, Brush, Pencil, Eraser, Clone, Recoloring, Paint Bucket, Gradient, lines and curves, shapes and text.

Main features:

Layers with blend modes, opacity, visibility and live thumbnails
Clickable history like Paint.NET
Support for Paint.NET effect plugins (.dll), through mono on Linux and .NET Framework on Windows, plus native plugins with a C API
Opens .pdn files
OpenRaster (.ora) for layered images, plus PNG, JPEG, WebP, AVIF, JPEG XL, BMP, TIFF, TGA, animated GIF and ICO
Recovery copies of unsaved images
Light, dark, system/KDE and fully custom themes
English and Spanish language support!
