    Unreal and Godot complement each other well. Unreal is amazing at high-end 3D and is great for things like AAA games, processing hundreds of millions of triangles, and simulations. Godot is great for 2D and low-end 3D games that don't require millions of triangles, and Godot is vastly smaller and more lightweight. If you want to "do it all", learn both Unreal and Godot.

    Unreal Engine is not a true open source engine. The license is not open source as it does not allow you to share the source code with the general public. Godot, on the opposite, if fully open source.

    Bevy is pretty new on the scene but rapidly growing in popularity since it's the first major open source Rust game engine (see: https://arewegameyet.rs/). I'd consider it to be the most similar to Godot on this list just because of how deeply community driven both projects are

    Their move from 1.x to 2.0 pissed a lot of people, because suddenly all the perpetual licenses were stuck with the now discontinued 1.x version, while 2.x is subscription only.

    The free/demo version lets you use the whole program and all features EXCEPT export. So you have the option of only subscribing when you actually have finished your game and cancel afterwards.
