POX added GImageReader as alternative to PDFTrailA brilliant interface for the superb OCR tool that is Tesseract. The options are really useful, such as customising the detection area, or creating several detection areas if, for example, part of the text isn’t in block letters (I dream that a consumer version of Tesseract might be able to handle handwriting as well) or isn’t legible in the chosen language. Comments and Reviews
A very simple front-end for multilingual text recognition. Allows selecting sections of pages to be translated and multipage translation - these were the features I needed and used just after installing.
Works only for images, not PDF of any nature.
Convert your PDFs to images... duh.
A brilliant interface for the superb OCR tool that is Tesseract. The options are really useful, such as customising the detection area, or creating several detection areas if, for example, part of the text isn’t in block letters (I dream that a consumer version of Tesseract might be able to handle handwriting as well) or isn’t legible in the chosen language. That said, one thing that would be a real bonus is either the ability to search through a batch of image documents imported into the software – like Paperwork does, although it deletes the file names – or at least the ability to perform batch detection.
It's not an alternative to Acrobat Pro; it lacks many features.
FOSS. It would be nice to automatically open to OCR, like the program
Photo Scan does, but Gimage is truly free.. and the image view is easy to see unlike with Photo Scan which clutters the screen space with an ad. Still updated but does not always do well with images.. NormCap is still my fave.
Very simple, the best and uses tesseract engine fo OCR
