Top 10 open source CMS for building a website
For quite some years now, Content Management Systems (CMS) have been on the rise and are growing at a fast pace. Surrounded by very active open source communities or developed by large tech companies, CMS are increasingly used by developers, web agencies and IT companies to improve productivity and simplify the process of developing complex websites. It's also a way to collaborate effectively with your team, take advantage of the community's many resources, helpers, and extensions and give your client access to an advanced administrative interface that is already ready to go.
But in this great environment of content management systems, there are multiple solutions: free, open source, paid, with or without databases, with more or less features ... and it can sometimes be difficult to navigate and choose the right tool for your website project showcase, blog, e-commerce website ...
In this list, I'll only focus on open source solutions because otherwise there would be too many choices but I'll also talk about paid solutions in another list.
So here's a selection of ten content management systems that I think are incredibly powerful and very used nowadays.

Ghost IS free — it's open source (MIT). The cost is hosting. Self-host on Hetzner (Germany) for €4-5/month, or use managed hosting like Midnight (UK, $12/month) or Ghost(Pro) ($15-18/month, runs on DigitalOcean — USA). Ghost Foundation is a non-profit registered in Singapore. So Ghost the software is free, but like a car — you need fuel. It is confusing I know, AlternativeTo, should make it LESS, not MORE confusing, a bad day?
Due to mobiledoc-kit bugs, typing and pasting of Chinese, Japanese, and Korean languages is not working properly.

I just read about this and it's ridiculous that the issue has been there for 2 years
They started off with a 'free' version, and then kept curtailing the number of functions included in this "free" version, until their SaaS version which is listed as 'Online' here in this entry on AlternativeTo.net, CONTAINS NO FREE TIER AT ALL!
To use the "free" version, one must SPEND MONEY on OWN SERVER and the minimum requirements Ghost mandates (nerdy dev speak like "node" etc etc); AND TIME & EFFORT of one's own or hire one of the nerdy devs who so passionately push this service.
All in all, this is all LEGIT under the plausible explanation of "SEO" which has mutated to mean GAMING THE SYSTEM! without anyone raising any objections even when it's obvious.
I'd reject Ghost and stay away from it just purely on moral and ethical grounds, not even counting any merit it may have in it's software or service. Has it become so difficult to be honest about one's product or service in today's day & age?
This is commercial. I don't know how long the free trial lasts, but they want your Credit Card info before you do anything.
You need a host, self-hosted (Hetzner) og just hosted, a British one. THAT'S for the the cash.. AlternativeTo COULD (should) have made a better display of "Ghost" ...
Fairly easy to template and even hack, as long as You self-host, but being implemented in NodeJS, it is not very easy on the system resources. As for front-end, the website will also use above-average amount of RAM through user's/visitor's browser. Authoring basic content is comfortable on the web as well as mobile, it is not for video, though. Although an MIT licensed OpenSource, it directly promotes commercial services, which fuels development and yields reliable documented integrations but disqualifies it from the FOSS label. Effectively, Ghost is a content platform allowing for ad and/or paywall based monetization. The easiest way, though, is to use partners ghost suggests, paying their fees. Cloud hosting offered directly id cheap at entry level but priced per paying member volume, so their "no revenue shares" claim is misleading. The software is ideal for creative/marketing agencies, reselling Ghost hosting and using one integrator across multiple instances.
You have to pay a monthly fee as a subscription, which starts from $ 9 (billed annually). That’s a high price compared to Kirby for example, which costs a one time fee of € 99 + VAT. Not to speak of all those free content management systems.

You’re right … but you need server access and NodeJS, an installation on a standard web host seems not possible.
