What is File Arbor?

File Arbor is a cross-platform desktop app for Windows and macOS that automatically organizes your files into the right folders — a modern alternative to Hazel, File Juggler, and DropIt. You set up rules once — based on file extension, name patterns (with full regex support), file size, or date — and File Arbor handles the rest. You can also combine multiple conditions in a single rule (for example, name starts with "IMG" AND extension is .jpeg) instead of creating a separate rule for every filter. It can monitor multiple directories simultaneously (Downloads, Desktop, Documents, etc.) and sort files in real time with Auto Mode, or run organization on a schedule — any day and time you choose. Beyond moving and renaming, File Arbor can scan inside nested subfolders (flattening or preserving the original structure), move files to Trash or delete them permanently, and even trigger shell commands or scripts when a rule matches — so you can convert, compress, upload, or notify as part of the workflow. An Action History view gives you a full audit trail of everything the app has done, grouped by action: moved, renamed, deleted, and command runs. For quick setup, there are one-click presets for common file types like images, documents, videos, and music.
