Comments and Reviews
Perhaps the best screen capture utility out there with full-screen capture, window capture, and selection capture ala Photoshop's "lasso" selection tool. Plus all the program's functions can be triggered by programmable global hotkeys.
...but that's not the half of it.
What the AlternativeTo description doesn't mention is that this util does a lot more than just screen capturing. It also provides an eyedropper color selection utility AND a resizeable on-screen ruler AND a magnify glass tool. I used to have four separate apps installed to do those four separate things! I tried over a dozen different screen utility apps and this is the only one I found that bundles all these functions together in one tiny package.
Highly recommended for even the user who only occasionally needs to screencap. And an ABSOLUTE MUST-HAVE for people like web developers and graphic design pros what with the additional features (especially the eyedropper).
[EDIT: One shortcoming I can think of is that other screencap apps -- commercial apps as well as freeware apps -- have added OCR capabilities to their apps whereas FastStone Capture has yet to implement such a feature. For now, an easy solution is to supplement FastStone Capture with a quality freeware screenshot OCR tool like Greenshot or JOCR.]
30 day free trial $19.95 There's also the free portable version 5.3 https://www.portablefreeware.com/?id=775 If you like the FastStone toolbar, you might also want to check out the free
Toolwiz Care screen capture tool.. it lets you add text to the image upfront.
With FastStone, you can choose to capture the full screen, an active window, objects, a rectangular region or a freehand region. With this variety of options, you can capture your entire screen, just a small window or anything in between. The program can take a scrolling capture, creating a snapshot of the entire content of a webpage, even if part of it is hidden and requires scrolling to view.
Once you’ve captured an image, the FastStone editor opens automatically. Here you have a basic array of tools that let you draw, highlight, magnify, annotate and combine screen captures.
Bought ~10 years ago, still used daily. Still finding things it can do
No options for changing recording format. Why wmv when mp4 or other containers are available. Other features are good, but is it worth it.
EDIT (2023/04/18): On the 2023 February update the developer has added the ability to save to mp4 that I mentioned above, they have also added the option to record both the microphone and speaker output, which is great. The choice/option to have them on their own tracks would be perfect, for those who want to make edits.
I am sure at one point there will be nothing worth adding or fixing on this, but if the developer is making improvements like this then a lifetime licence is definitely worth it. As of now I think this seems better than ShareX's screen recording feature.
I didn't realize I was liking it. The original freeware is all I need and it is no longer available. I'm not interested in playing with video.
Awesome tool, love ftp support!
