What is Extra Cup?

Extra Cup is a small macOS menu bar app that stops your Mac falling asleep on its own.

One switch keeps the Mac awake for 30 minutes, an hour, two hours, or until you turn it off. The menu bar icon shows a small clock while a timed session counts down, and the session ends on its own so a forgotten switch doesn't run the battery flat. The screen still sleeps as usual; only the Mac stays up.

The second switch, Double Espresso, keeps the Mac running with the lid closed, with no external display and no power adapter: a download, a build, a backup or an overnight job carries on in your bag. The first time you turn it on, macOS asks you to allow Extra Cup in System Settings > General > Login Items, because the lid switch works through a small helper with system rights. It shows a heat warning before first use, and a caution while the Mac is on battery with no display attached.

Free, with no account, no subscription and no telemetry. It asks macOS to stay awake rather than moving your mouse or faking activity. Signed with a Developer ID and notarized by Apple. Available in 13 languages.

Requires a Mac with Apple silicon and macOS 14 or later. Intel Macs can't run it.
