Apparently there is one more tool that does this and with user interface to facilitate (or not) (https://alternativeto.net/software/metadata-/about/, by Logipole). I found a very interesting and complete table: [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_digital_image_metadata_editors](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_digital_image_metadata_editors)
it is free and it is powerful
I had thousands of images in hundreds of folders where the folder creation date was different from the image creation date.
What I did with ExifTool is I created the folders named according to the image creation date in the format yyyy-mm-dd so that everything became sorted nicely. (I retained the original folder descriptive name using the Bulk Rename Utility)
Hybrid Analysis found malicious code.

"Assuming you are using Windows, if you rename exiftool(-k).exe to exiftool(-overwrite_original -all=).exe you can simply drag and drop your photos onto the EXE and it will automatically strip all of the metadata from the image(s)."
Powerful. Supports all the file formats I can think of. With the new functionality of changing the date and time for renaming it is almost perfect
WOW! this is the only tool I found that lets you edit about ALL the meta data in numerous file types. Even ISO, Aperture, Focal Length, … which are not supported other tools, even quite expensive ones like Lightroom.
