Most users think VeraCrypt is a great alternative to Cryptomator.
JohnFastman Veracrypt is a program for creating an encrypted container in which you can hide files protected by various encryption algorithms. It is excellent and extremely useful, but not for syncing files to the cloud because files you change inside the veracrypt container won't be seen to change by an external sync program. Veracrypt addresses a different need to Cryptomator.

VeraCrypt is not about encrypting data on the cloud. It is more about local encryption.

This alternative is disputed. TrueCrypt is still a legitimate alternative to Cryptomator, but it might have issues that some users think are important.

EncFS provides an encrypted filesystem in user-space. It runs without any special permissions and uses the FUSE library and Linux kernel module to provide the filesystem interface. You can find links to source and binary releases below.

      Warning

The author has agreed that EncFS in its current form is dangerous (to security) for several reasons. Wikipedia has a brief summary: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/EncFS#General_Security_Concerns

The actual audit, which the author participated in, is here: https://defuse.ca/audits/encfs.htm

Basically Windows version of Gocryptfs, which is one of the best alternative for EncFS. Cppcryptfs is in early stage of development (as of 2021) though.
