I've been a devoted Quicken user for well over 15 years. Recently I've found it tiresome and bloated and really not working as well as I'd like. The more history you have the larger the file and the longer the load time. The mobile app was slow and took forever to load and update and was just not convenient at all. I discovered CountAbout in 2016. I researched it and even tried it out for a while but wasn't ready to switch. Instead, I upgraded to Quicken 2017. Oddly enough, some of the features I saw in CountAbout changed the way I used Quicken for the better.

By April 2017, I was tired of Quicken. It was as bloated as ever, wasn't consistently updating my accounts, and the mobile app was all but useless. It was faster to TeamViewer into my home PC and add a transaction remotely than use the mobile app right there on my Android phone. I had contacted customer support several times and spent hours on the phone with support getting more and more frustrated. Most of the time the problems were like digital rot: something that worked had stopped and needed to be reset to work again.

I explored CountAbout again. I signed up for a trial and used them concurrently. I contacted support with usage and best practice questions. I explained about quirky things I did in Quicken and was given suggestions to make them work in CountAbout. Immediate replies, but one thing I noticed: nothing ever broke. CountAbout just always worked as long as I had an internet connection, which is basically always. The mobile app wasn't perfect, but was lightning fast and a great way to enter transactions on the road. I could add one at the gas station in about 15 seconds. As I waited for the receipt to print, I could nearly have it entered. No more waiting to get home to enter transactions!

From experience, I don't recommend importing your data from Quicken. Just pick a date and make the switch. Importing just didn't work for me and it was easier to make Quicken my pre-April 2017 archive and Countabout has every transaction from March 2017 forward. Simplifying categories made the change even easier. If I'm budgeting for food, do I really need Fast Food, Restaurants, Take Out, etc? How often do I need to make this a granular a dive? Still, this wasn't an issue with CountAbout so much as it was an issue with Quicken and my usage of it after so many years. It was best for me to make a clean break and start fresh. I ran my end of year reports in Quicken once I took it off line and only twice have had to open it to research something, and each time I do and it takes 2-3 minutes to load, I am so happy I switched.

Should you want to try the import, the only way to start over in CountAbout is to delete your account and register for a new one. So feel free to try but know there's a do-over during your two-week trial if you want to discover what works for you.

But then it happened. Perhaps it's because CountAbout is still a comparatively small community, but in just the last 4 months they've been making fantastic changes. Feature requests are being implemented, the mobile app is even better. At the current pricing of $40/year, it's a no-brainer; two years of CountAbout are about the same as one version of Quicken, and it works better. To date, I've never experienced an outage or a problem with my accounts not updating.

If you're thinking of making the switch, try the two-week trial. It does take a little getting used to, but have faith: It's not a Quicken clone. It took me a year to come to terms with the decision to switch and once I did it simplified my life.

It is intuitive and simple for a senior citizen like me who may not be as tech savvy as the young folks with apps. I can download to EXCEL easily enough and create pivot tables for what I need at tax time. Was a breeze to setup. I made an error that the co-founder immediately responded and helped me with. What customer service!!! Carol Johnston

I like the interface and that it's an online service and that it is supposed to download transactions from my bank (s).

Looks promising. Supports UK banks but no obvious forecasting abilities and report are very basic

I love how easy CountAbout is to set up and edit categories. The reporting is intuitive and exactly what I need. Customer Service has been fast and clear.
I was a Mint user for 2 years and a Quicken user for 20 years before that.
Mint was overly simplistic and not really useful - horrible reporting, not to mention loads of duplicate transactions in 2017. What led me to CountAbout was a wasted 30 min chat session with Mint where nothing was resolved. Quicken used to be my favorite application of all time until the functionality became way too complex and the downloads kept breaking. Their customer support has Pacific workday support hours so once I'd eeked out time to talk to them during my own workday, I had to spend hours and hours doing catch up on my transactions. VERY happy to have found CountAbout!

Easy to download Quicken data. Easy to navigate and set up. Custom reports and the price is right.
