AxCrypt is a simple and effective open-source file encryption software compatible with Windows, macOS, Android and iOS.
Key features
• Collaboration: Allows encrypted files to be shared securely with other AxCrypt users, who can open them with their own password using public key cryptography. Requires an Internet connection for sharing (unlike Xecrets, which allows offline sharing).
• Password management: Includes an integrated password manager (Premium) to generate, store and organise your passwords, notes and cards securely, reducing the risk of using weak or reused passwords.
• Robust encryption: Uses the AES-256 algorithm for Premium and Business subscribers, and AES-128 for the free version, providing strong protection against unauthorised access.
• Integration with cloud storage: Automatically encrypts files before they are synchronised with services such as Dropbox, Google Drive, OneDrive and iCloud, ensuring security locally and in the cloud.
• Multilingual: Supports multiple languages, including English, French, German, Italian, Korean, Spanish, Swedish, Dutch, Portuguese, Russian, with more languages planned for the future.
• Ease of use: Offers an intuitive interface with encryption/decryption via drag-and-drop, double-click or via the Windows Explorer context menu.
• Secure folders: Allows you to designate folders to automatically encrypt newly added files with a single click.
• Offline encryption/decryption: Works without an Internet connection for local encryption and decryption, ideal for use on offline devices.
• Additional features (Premium/Business) :
- File name encryption for enhanced confidentiality.
- Secure deletion of files to prevent their recovery.
- Multi-factor authentication for enhanced security.
- Group and key management for businesses, with master key recovery (Business).
Other information
• Plans: A free version with limited functionality (AES-128, no filename encryption or password management). The Premium version ($47/year or $5/month) includes AES-256 and advanced features. The Business plan adds group management. Ascrypt is available on Windows, macOS, Android and iOS, with a user-friendly interface and robust encryption, making it a reliable tool for protecting sensitive data, whether locally, on cloud services or when sharing.
Notes
• AxCrypt does not support full disk encryption, but focuses on encrypting individual files.
• Registration with an AxCrypt ID (via email) is required to use the software, along with a master password to unlock files.
• A standalone version (without installation) is available, but with limited functionality (for example, no context menu integration).
• AxCrypt is compatible with Xecrets Ez, an alternative developed by the same creator, optimised for macOS, Linux and Windows.
Comments and Reviews
I liked it better in the past, when you could use it for encrypting files using different passwords per file. Now with this mater password approach I'm already looking for alternatives.
In regard of ease of use and security i find it the best.
unfortunately I'm allergic to the cloud and all online storage.
fortunately this app is not about cloud, but whatever...
I am embarrassed to admit that I am a programmer who had no real knowledge of how important it is to have some sort of encryption software installed on your computer. Luckily, a good friend of mine introduced me to AxCrypt not too long ago, and I have never looked back! I am incredibly happy with not only the product itself, but the support personnel at AxCrypt are always ready to help you if you have a question! Highly recommend this software :D
Love this product!! Amazing software with great additional features for Premium subscribers. Very happy with my subscription, and I would highly recommend it to anyone in the business for encryption and security software.
One of the best apps for protecting files until they change the way it works. Now you have a "master pass" for all files, where previously you could encrypted different files with different passwords.
The legacy version of this software still exist, albeit without future updates. Nonetheless, the legacy program still offers the same awesome features and is extremely less clunky then the new version. Even though I personally dislike the new version for some cosmetic and systemic features, I still trust this company and their original value of keeping my most important files safe and secured with their great solution.
AxCrypt is now available for macOS on the AxCrypt download page. No need for an alternative ;-)
No a replacement is definitely needed now that basic features like secure deletion of a file is no longer a simple 2 click operation. But instead now involves a monthly payment and the opening of a program with a clunky not very intuitive UI.
