I'm using joplin with joplin server, I have tested obsidian and appflowy. Affine is the only one who has convinced me ! Easy, open source, easy self hostable, whiteboard with handwriten note. Yeah, it's in dev and all features are not here, but it's usable.

It can't truly be used as open-source software, and is of Chinese origin. Very slow compared to alternatives. Development has been very slow over the years, so it was hype at first, then userbase lost interest.

While AFFiNE is privacy-focused as a standalone product, their AI service raises privacy concerns. The core product without AI is excellent for privacy-conscious users. However, according to their AI terms:

  • Data sent to AI is not anonymized
  • User information is shared with third-party AI model providers
  • No opt-out option for model training
  • They explicitly state they 'may use data from your AI usage to improve models'
  • Users are advised to avoid entering sensitive/confidential content

If you're looking for a private alternative to Notion/Miro, use AFFiNE without the AI features. The base product respects privacy, but the AI service doesn't meet privacy-focused standards.

I like the Split View and the Journal. Had issues getting a template to download/install. You can drag/drop images, but context menu doesn't work in notes, so it's Ctrl-V vs paste. Biggest drawback is no Android App. But AFFiNE offers cloud backup functionalities. From Brave AI: "AFFiNE supports syncing notes and files to cloud storage services like Google Drive, OneDrive, Dropbox, or Nextcloud in an encrypted format."

Well, yes Notion alternative. FOSS is very good. BUT: -Miro alternative?

  • Not that close. With the current 0.15 canary, there is not much we can say about the Edgeless mode(which compared to the Miro) Missing many UX, the UX isn't comfortable.
  • You want to change the zoom_step level because who wants to zoom in and out 25%? Look at Miro. look at Excalidraw, their zoom step is only 5% (Miro has some interesting zoom_step based on current zoom_level calculations). Because it's FOSS you can just go fork the repo and make change right? Well yeah, but also no. Because it's not "WORK OFFLINE" even if you make a change and build the app for local use, you can't because you have to set up another docker server so it can be used. (Basically, you self-host the entire Affine industry) I wish it just went with like what Obsidian does, store the file in markdown and...(maybe not that performance) work offline with just my laptop...
  • Anyway, it's still in the early stage, if you have OCD I don't recommend this to you. - But again, we don't even have many options. Obsidian with Excalidraw? Not even. Miro? Online and idk 3 are limited for free users. Notion? No Miro(whiteboard).
  • Maybe 5 or 10 years later someone gonna make a all in one. Until then. I have to use 3 apps at once. Miro, Obsidian, Notion.
  • Also, you don't have to log in to use Affine, just skip that and use the local workspace. (You have to manually export and sync the workspace offen)

The app is cool and pretty functional, especially for it being in early stages.

HOWEVER, in order to sync your data you have to create an account and use their cloud service. As per their privacy policy they collect and share your name, email address, and phone number, device information, ip address, and gps data.

I almost believe that I had found the holy grail of computer programs!

It's almost there! But unfortunately, for advanced users in information research, data collection and sources. This program will not do.

For the simple reason of not attaching files.

Even attaching the file, to open it is necessary to download it, as if it were a conventional download, and this is a serious defect of the program.

If this program is able to create a preview portal for any attached file. Be it a website, a internet video, an internet image... and... consequently... a doc, a pdf, an xlx, dot, mp4, mkv, mp3, etc... if this application comes to have this functionality it will become the holy grail of all computer programs.
