X is open sourcing its "For You" algorithm and letting users check for shadowbans

X is publishing more of the source-code behind its “For You” timeline and core ranking system on GitHub under the Apache 2.0 license, including model configuration, filters, ranking parameters, and components that researchers can test independently. Developers can submit changes, but X decides what reaches production and is keeping some enforcement-related systems private to prevent abuse.

The company is also testing “Under the Hood,” a tool that lets selected users download a JSON file showing aggregate labels and ranking signals applied to their content over the previous month. These can include restrictions related to NSFW content, spam, violence, impersonation, hateful conduct, and civic integrity, helping users understand whether their posts may have been effectively shadowbanned, had their visibility reduced, or been excluded from recommendations.

The release doesn't cover all ranking components, advertising systems, or information X says could be used to manipulate the algorithm. X plans to expand third-party auditing and may add more transparency around areas such as brand safety.
