OpenAI launches official ChatGPT desktop app for Linux with Codex support

OpenAI has FINALLY launched an official ChatGPT desktop app for Linux 🐧, responding to repeated requests from the open source and developer communities. This release provides Linux users with a dedicated native application, rather than relying on the web version or unofficial third-party clients. The app also includes built-in access to Codex, OpenAI’s coding agent.

Officially supported distributions at launch are Ubuntu 24.04 LTS, Debian 13, Fedora 43 and 44. OpenAI notes that these distributions also serve as the base for many downstream Linux variants, so compatibility may extend beyond the officially listed systems.

While the Linux app is being released in preview, the company says this launch addresses one of the last remaining major desktop operating systems and expands access for those who prefer open source environments. The app is available worldwide now!
