Zed, the AI-native code editor from the creators of Atom, has finally reached version 1.0

After five years of development and countless releases, Zed has reached version 1.0, offering a high-performance code editor available on macOS, Windows, and Linux. This milestone reflects the completion of a million-line codebase supporting a wide range of developer workflows such as Git integration, Secure Shell protocol (SSH) remoting, debugging, and language extensions.

Building on its core architecture, Zed debuted as an AI-native editor. It allows parallel operation of multiple AI agents and provides real-time edit predictions at the keystroke level. The Agent Client Protocol (ACP) further enables integration with leading agents including Claude Code, Codex, OpenCode, and now Cursor. These agents interact directly within Zed, expanding its intelligent coding capabilities.

Following the introduction of AI features, Zed for Business will soon launch with centralized billing, role-based access controls, and team management, addressing organizational deployment needs. While version 1.0 signals product maturity, ongoing development continues. The team is actively working on DeltaDB, a conflict-free replicated data type (CRDT) based synchronization engine designed for character-level change tracking and real-time collaboration among humans and agents. This upcoming feature aims to let users and agents share codebase context seamlessly.
