Google to end ChromeOS support by 2034, transitioning to Googlebook OS

Google has confirmed plans to wind down ChromeOS support in 2034, with updates and security patches set to continue until mid 2034 as the company shifts future devices to Googlebook OS, the company’s next generation of laptops, replacing the traditional Chromebook model with a new Android based operating system designed to take over from ChromeOS. The timeline appeared on a support page for enterprise and education customers, although Google has not confirmed whether the same deadline applies to consumer devices, including Chromebooks currently promised up to 10 years of support.

For qualifying Chromebooks whose support would extend beyond 2034, Google says it will support a transition to Googlebook OS, with some devices receiving a direct migration path. Many newer Chromebooks are expected to qualify, but Google has not yet published a full compatibility list or detailed migration process.

Googlebook OS management features for enterprise and education customers are planned for the second half of 2027, with the first Googlebook devices are scheduled to launch on October 4, 2026
