Google brings Gemini's Personal Intelligence to Android Auto and cars with Google built-in
Google has announced that its Gemini AI assistant is now available globally on Android Auto and in cars with Google built-in, with a new capability called Personal Intelligence that lets the assistant draw on a user's own Gmail, Photos, and Calendar data to answer questions hands-free. According to the company's blog post, drivers can speak naturally to locate a flight gate, find a restaurant, or get directions without touching their phones, with the assistant pulling context from connected apps and Maps. Google frames the feature as aimed at complex, personalized queries rather than simple voice commands.
Rollout timing differs by platform. Personal Intelligence begins rolling out on Android Auto immediately, while cars with Google built-in are slated to receive it in the coming months, per the announcement. Users who have already opted into the feature in the Gemini app will find it carries over into the vehicle; those who haven't can adjust preferences in their Gemini settings. On cars with Google built-in, Google says personal responses are shared only when the driver's phone is connected inside the vehicle.
Google emphasized privacy controls alongside the launch, noting that apps remain disconnected until a user explicitly turns the feature on and that it can be switched off at any time. Without Personal Intelligence enabled, the company says in-car functions such as navigation, music, calls, and general questions continue to work, though answers won't be tailored to the individual.
