Microsoft Word will soon start auto-saving your documents to the cloud by default

Microsoft is rolling out a significant shift for Microsoft Word in Windows, now saving new documents to the cloud by default through the Microsoft 365 Insider program. While users previously needed to enable AutoSave or select cloud storage manually, Word will now store files automatically on Microsoft OneDrive or another chosen cloud provider. The company says this change is supposed to minimize the risk of data loss and let users sync their documents across multiple devices, so they’re always available not just on Windows but also on Android, iOS, web browsers, and basically anywhere the Word app is supported.

Word will generate new file names based on the current date, instead of appending numbers, and the app will also prompt users before closing documents that have not been named or manually saved. Users can choose a different cloud storage location or switch back to local saving, but since the feature is enabled by default, opting out requires going to File Options Save, unchecking 'AutoSave files stored in the cloud by default in Word,' and checking 'Save to computer by default.'

The cloud-saving default will be available in Word for Windows 11 version 2509 and above. Microsoft also says similar changes are planned for Microsoft Excel and Microsoft PowerPoint, raising the question of whether Microsoft will clearly explain how to disable these changes or if users will only notice when their files no longer show up where they expect. For everyone else looking for a fully offline and free alternative, you can always give LibreOffice - Writer a try 😉

That's why almost no one cares to pirate Microsoft software. Zero respect for their ethics.

I really don't know if I'm happy with this autoupdate being enforced, without any control provided to me for the target disk/cloud service. I'm gonna have to dig out my old DVD collection and get ahold of the older version of Office when things were simpler.

You'd have to a few bricks shy of a full load to be happy about this nonsense. And, I wouldn't bother digging when programs like LibreOffice and ONLYOFFICE are still simple, free of Microshit's dystopian nonsense, and as a bonus, free to download.

Personally, I'm an avid user of open source equivalents. I used to use LibreOffice, but moved to OnlyOffice as it has better compatibility (and better integration with cloud storage like Nextcloud) with M$ Office. There are still limitations so still have to use M$ Office for work 🙁.

Man, just stop it Microsoft. Word 2013 was peak, no unnecessary features, no cloud forced onto you, no stupid AI (i'm not talking about Clippy, he's not stupid, he just wanted to help), and it was a lifetime purchase!

I and my dad still have it (as DVD); and to this day is peak.

Whats next? Saving the entire disk in the cloud?

You'll be surprised that you can already pay 400€ a year for that (Veeam), it's just not forced onto you yet.

You're right Microsoft, it's time to remove this floppy disk icon that people are so familiar with since Windows 1.0 and just saving "into the cloud". You can also remove "My Documents" folder and even "C:/" since users now expect their files to be wandering in the sky or whatever, and no more on USB keys or emails.

And what happens if it rains? Data leak?
