OneDrive adds new AI File Insights, Audio Overviews, advanced PDF tools & more

OneDrive’s Spring 2025 update brings several AI-powered enhancements with Microsoft Copilot now offering instant file summaries, frequently asked questions, Q&A sessions, and audio overviews for Word documents, PDFs, and transcripts. Users can experience hands-free playback through a new floating audio player, and even ask Copilot questions about images to identify objects or extract text.

Building on sharing improvements, the new Hero link system creates a single, customizable link per file, while Copilot can auto-generate sharing summaries. Additional updates allow users to edit permissions in bulk and share directly from browser address bar URLs. Initial file sync is now up to three times faster, with refined setup flows and quicker share dialogs for an improved onboarding and daily use experience.

A new Offline Web Mode allows users to edit shortcut folders without an internet connection. PDF editing tools have also gained functions such as annotation, bookmarks, page rotation, dark mode, and merging, further reducing reliance on external apps. For organizations, OneDrive for Business will designate unlicensed accounts as read-only after 60 days of inactivity starting September 26, 2025, moving them to archived status after 93 days. Admins will retain oversight but must act to restore access.
