Google introduces new AI-driven scam detection features for Android phones
Google has introduced new AI-driven scam detection features for Android users, focusing on identifying conversational scams. In collaboration with financial institutions, Google has developed AI models that identify suspicious patterns based on common scam tactics. These models operate entirely on-device, ensuring user privacy while providing real-time alerts during conversations.
The Scam Detection feature for Google Messages alerts users to potential scams in SMS, MMS, and RCS messages from unknown numbers, offering options to dismiss, report, or block suspicious messages. Only essential sender details and recent messages are shared with Google and carriers. For calls, the scam detection feature is disabled by default and processes call audio on-device without storing or recording conversations. When activated, it emits beeps during the call to inform participants of its operation.
Additional Android updates include live location sharing via Find My Device for secure location sharing with trusted contacts, expanded support for gaming apps on Android Auto, and shopping insights on Google Chrome for Android, which help users track price drops and compare prices.
Given how Gmail can be pretty bad at detecting spams, I wish good luck to public services and legit companies to trick the AI to prevent false positives, when other companies will just train an AI to stay undetected. Or, we can just turn off theses infantilizing features and use our brain. Every scammed people I've encountered were naive, or plain stupid.
