Android 17 released with improved multitasking, screen reactions, and foldable gaming mode

Android 17 is rolling out first to Pixel smartphones, with other eligible Android devices set to receive the update through 2026. Some advanced models will gain [Gemini Intelligence] features later this summer.

The update’s multitasking overhaul introduces Bubbles, compact floating windows that allow any app to run in a dedicated space for quick switching and resizing. On larger screens, a bubble bar at the bottom streamlines moving between apps and maximizing workflows.

For security and privacy, Android 17 lets users grant temporary location access, select individual contacts to share, and enhance phone protection using biometrics in Find Hub. Improvements to Live Threat Detection block more suspicious apps and scams, while Advanced Protection mode bolsters defense against sophisticated threats. PIN guess limits and longer wait times after failed attempts further strengthen security.

Android 17 enhances screen recording with a new toolbar, an improved workflow, and the Screen Reactions feature that allows simultaneous capture of your display and selfie camera. Foldable device owners benefit from a split 50/50 gaming mode with a dynamic gamepad below the game view, maximizing screen use during play. The update also implements app memory limits, helping deliver better performance and longer battery life.

Following these system-level changes, Android 17 brings usability enhancements such as hiding app names on the home screen (finally!), broader parental controls, dedicated assistant volume settings, and greater control over the dark theme.

Why havent big tech companies gotten yet no one wants their pseudo AI? The floating windows could be pretty nice though I can see how it may pose a potential security risk if an app has screen access. No idea what is meant with the folding gaming mode, Id have to see it. Screen reactions I feel could be abused as a method of monitoring your reaction to ads depending how it is implemented even though I do understand the use for it.
