Firefox confirms support for Manifest V2 & V3 extensions, contrasting Google's phase-out
Google is set to phase out support for Manifest V2 extensions by mid-2025, affecting tools like uBlock Origin that rely on the blockingWebRequest API. In contrast, Mozilla Firefox has committed to supporting both Manifest V2 and V3 extensions, giving developers more flexibility and ensuring users can continue using their preferred tools without being forced to transition. This decision allows Firefox to maintain the availability of both blockingWebRequest and declarativeNetRequest APIs, preserving the functionality of privacy-focused tools.
Meanwhile, other browsers like Brave and Opera have also announced intentions to support some classic extensions, but their level of commitment remains uncertain. As Google replaces blockingWebRequest with declarativeNetRequest, the effectiveness of content filtering extensions is reduced, affecting users who rely heavily on advanced ad-blocking and privacy features.
By June 2025, Chrome and other Chromium-based browsers like Vivaldi or Edge will lose Manifest V2 support entirely.

While Google continues forward with its focus on being an ad-based business (more power to them I guess), it's nice to have a savior like Mozilla to defend its promise on continuing support for Manifest V2. I just only hope that other non-Chromium browsers can step up and accompany Firefox in the browser market share.
