Kiwi Browser shuts down, but its extension code will live on in Microsoft Edge

Arnaud Granal, the founder and primary developer of the open-source Kiwi Browser, has announced the discontinuation of the project. The Chromium-based web browser for Android, known for supporting extensions and offering unique features, will no longer be maintained after January 2025. Granal made the announcement on Discord and GitHub, where the repository has now been archived.

The extensions code from Kiwi Browser has been integrated into Microsoft Edge Canary, providing an alternative for users seeking similar functionality. While the latest version of Kiwi Browser remains available for download on GitHub, it will not receive further updates.

Granal clarified that the decision to discontinue the browser was personal, as he lacks the time to continue its development and maintenance. He emphasized the importance of exploring alternative browsers such as Microsoft Edge Canary, Vivaldi, Brave, or Firefox to ensure security and access to updates.

Are there any other android mobile browsers that support as many chrome extensions? Kiwi has been invaluable as a way to run extensions on android.

The best bet now are Firefox and its forks. I recommend getting the Iceraven fork via the APK on Github that matches your phone specifications.

As a result of being open-source, thankfully it will likely be forked and continue to live on.

Feature-wise, as uncompetitive Firefox is on desktop, its mobile browser is very excellent, only missing tab groups resulting in hundreds of unorganized tabs in the list.

I hope there's a maintained fork of it in the near future, because this was most definitely the best browser on Android.
