Google launches AI-assisted video editing collaboration tool 'Vids' for Workspace users

Google has introduced a new AI-assisted video collaboration app, Google Vids, for Workspace. The app aims to simplify business video creation, featuring a timeline interface similar to Google Slides. This allows users to organize video assets from Google Drive or other sources in a chronological order.

Vids provides users with the ability to record voiceovers or film directly within the app. It also offers a variety of templates, backgrounds, and a stock media library for adding video, images, or audio. Google's AI assistant, Google Gemini, assists in creating initial storyboards, scripts, and text-to-speech voiceovers. The app can generate editable storyboards and automatically assemble a first draft using suggested scenes from stock videos, images, and background music. Vids also supports collaboration by allowing users to share videos, invite others to comment or directly edit the video, with inline visibility of comments and changes.

The app’s goal is to make video production accessible to all, and although it shares similarities with tools like Clipchamp and Canva video editing features, Vids aspires to distinguish itself by integrating with Google Workspace and offering AI-driven capabilities. The platform is currently in limited testing, and will be initially available in Workspace Labs this June.
