Notion acquires the privacy-focused platform Skiff, ending its services within 6 months

Notion has acquired Skiff, a privacy-focused productivity tool delivering end-to-end encrypted services including file storage ( Skiff Drive ), documents ( Skiff Pages ), calendar events ( Skiff Calendar ), and email ( Skiff Mail ). Following the acquisition, Skiff announced that it would be integrated into Notion's platform, with Skiff's standalone products ceasing to exist after six months.

Skiff users were informed that their accounts would not be converted into Notion accounts. Nonetheless, the company has provided users with the option to easily export or migrate their data to other services. Skiff was initially introduced as a secure alternative to Google Docs and Microsoft 365 Copilot, later incorporating calendar and email solutions into its offering.

This move aligns with Notion's ongoing integration with other third-party services acquired by the company in the past, such as Cron Calendar, which was recently merged into the new Notion Calendar. If you are a Skiff user, we recommend checking out the alternative pages linked at the beginning of this post. You might also want to consider the productivity tools from Tuta Mail or Proton, which includes tools like Proton Mail, Proton Drive, and Proton Calendar.

Baffling why Notion bought this just to shut it down instead of using the acquisition to expand their offering & maybe compete with bigger productivity suites.

It's always like this, every time I find a good new service, it's always bought up by a big fish and taken out of circulation, destroying competition in the process. This is why I don't sign up for any service that hasn't been around for at least 10 years, to avoid these disappointments.
