Google announces Android XR, a new operating system for VR and AR headsets & smart glasses
Google has introduced Android XR, a new operating system designed specifically for extended reality (XR) devices such as AR and VR headsets and glasses. Along with the launch, Google has released the Android XR SDK Developer Preview, offering developers tools like AR Core, Android Studio, Jetpack Compose and Unity.
In partnership with Samsung, Google is developing Project Moohan, an Android XR-powered headset similar to the Apple Vision Pro or the Meta Quest 3, aimed at providing immersive and mixed-reality experiences. The platform will support popular Google apps like Google TV, Google Photos, YouTube, Google Chrome and Google Gemini, allowing users to interact within virtual environments.
Existing apps on the Google Play Store for mobile and tablets will be compatible with Android XR, with dedicated XR apps and games expected next year. Google is also collaborating with Qualcomm, Lynx, Sony, and XREAL to develop Android XR smartglasses, with plans to test prototype glasses with selected users.

Comments
After the big failure of the Google Glass ten years ago, I thought that Google has understood that nobody want expensive brittle fake glasses. Eyeglasses are already burdensome, adding the heaviness of "XR" (some sort of Mixed Reality with some AI) won't turn them into something fun even if they can forecast the weather, recall phone numbers or recognize the specie of any random flower, but yet another accessory to charge every few hours that will take the dust after few weeks.
