Court rules Google Play an illegal monopoly, forces opening to third-party stores by 2024

A recent court ruling in the Epic Games v. Google case has found Google Play Store to be an illegal monopoly, necessitating major changes to the app marketplace for at least three years. Starting November 1st, 2024, Google must allow third-party app stores to access its full Google Play catalog and distribute their stores through Google Play, unless developers choose to opt out. This decision marks a significant shift in the control Google has over its app ecosystem.

The ruling also alters Google's billing practices, freeing developers from the obligation to use Google Play Billing for their apps. This change provides developers with more flexibility in choosing payment methods and setting prices. Additionally, Android developers can now inform users about alternative payment options within the Play Store and link to other app download methods outside the Play Store.

Furthermore, the decision prohibits Google from offering financial incentives to developers for exclusive launches on Google Play or discouraging them from launching on competing platforms. Google is also barred from providing benefits to device makers or carriers for preinstalling the Play Store or avoiding the installation of rival app stores. Google has been given eight months to implement these changes, with oversight from a technical committee to manage disputes between Epic and Google. Despite the ruling's intention to promote competition, Google plans to appeal, citing concerns about potential negative impacts on consumers, developers, and device makers.

What can I say except a lot of alternatives stores will become available on the Google Play store with no control over what apps are on them and a potential security risk because of the wrong idea that if an app is on a store it is safe.

Well, it's not like app were that safe when only on Google Play, looking at you TikTok. I hope that F-Droid and its alternatives will become available on the Play Store soon enough
