Google Meet rolls out 1080p resolution video conferencing for select users
Google Meet is introducing a new video enhancement for select users of Google Workplace: 1080p resolution calls. This feature is available only for Business and Enterprise users and is not accessible on regular Google accounts, Workspace Essentials, Business Starter, Education Fundamentals accounts, and others. Although the upgrade from 720p to 1080p is off by default, eligible users will receive an on-screen message to turn it on when they enter a meeting.
To utilize this feature, users need to have a device with a 1080p camera. Eligible users will receive the feature starting today, with a gradual rollout to more users through May 4. While Microsoft Teams and Zoom also provide 1080p, neither service defaults to this resolution, and the feature is available only in specific situations.
The 1080p video enhancement is mainly focused on improving the video conferencing experience for Business and Enterprise users. However, Google One subscribers with 2TB or more of storage space are also eligible to use this feature. To benefit from the improved video quality, users may need to upgrade their lighting and ensure they are in a well-lit environment.
In recent months, Google Meet has also added other features to enhance the video conferencing experience, including 360-degree video backgrounds for mobile users and an option for users with low-bandwidth internet connections to turn off video streaming altogether.
