Instagram testing NFT integration starting this week
Announced by Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg and confirmed by the Meta Newsroom on social media channels, the Instagram photo sharing social network will begin testing support for non-fungible tokens on Instagram.
The announcement states that it will enable NFTs in order to "allow creators to take control over their work, fanbase and income." This initial testing will be limited to "a handful of US creators and collectors" according to Head of Instagram Adam Mosseri. It was also shared that sharing these collectibles via Instagram will not have any fees.
Following this test rollout alongside a wider rollout for more Instagram users over time, other parts of Meta, including Facebook, Facebook Messenger, and WhatsApp. It will also support augmented reality features within Instagram Stories to view 3D NFTs.
To start, Meta NFT integration will reportedly support collectables hosted on the Ethereum, Polygon, Solana, and Flow blockchains.
