Ranking VPN services is incredibly difficult because everyone has different experiences, preferences, and expectations for what makes a "perfect" provider. For me, privacy comes first above all else. I try to keep a wide range of factors in mind, but I’ve moved away from commercial companies like Surfshark. To me, they feel more like a business than an activist-driven service with privacy as their top priority.

Centralized

  1. Free the internet from data collection with Mullvad VPN – a service that helps keep your online activity, identity, and location private. Only €5/month.

I'd go with Mullvad as my number one choice for a regular VPN service, simply because they've proven how reliable they are over the years. Their zero-logs policy has been verified as legitimate, and following the Malwarebytes findings, they now undergo independent audits from time to time.

  2. Proton VPN icon

Swiss-based VPN that ensures online privacy with a high-speed network, advanced encryption, and no-logs policy, offering a free version. Supports multiple platforms and unblocks content worldwide.

There’s been a lot of discussion about Proton over the past decade. They’ve certainly become more commercial-minded, but the VPN service remains their flagship offering for protection — without it, their promise of full protection falls flat. They’re also actively pursuing high-tier audits to back up their claims.

  3. Anonymous VPN service with no IP or traffic logs, privacy-focused logins using random accounts, payments via Bitcoin's Lightning Network, and robust encryption.

I'd rank Obscura as my third pick because they take the most similar approach to Mullvad. They're more commercially minded than Mullvad, but their infrastructure is reliable enough to earn them a high ranking.

Like Mullvad, AzireVPN is also funded by Malwarebytes, but it remains independent in its corporate decision-making back in Sweden. They’re the only provider that fully owns its servers, and they’re highly communicative and transparent with their customers. They also undergo infrastructure audits, making them a stable and reliable service.

The I2P network provides strong privacy protections for communication over the Internet. Many activities that would risk your privacy on the public Internet can be conducted anonymously inside I2P.

    c17s5qhuc17s5qhu’s note

I prefer I2P over Tor because Tor has faced increasing scrutiny and public backlash in recent years. I2P’s decentralized, peer-to-peer infrastructure makes it more resilient for internal communications, and its lack of exit nodes makes it significantly harder for external parties to tap into or monitor the traffic.

  2. Tor icon
     Like

Tor is free software and an open network that helps you defend against traffic analysis, a form of network surveillance that threatens personal freedom and privacy, confidential business activities and relationships, and state security.

Tor remains the legacy of decentralized internet infrastructure for online anonymity. It has its pros and cons, but it’s still highly reliable.

  3. Freenet icon
     Like

Freenet is a peer-to-peer platform for decentralized applications—communication, collaboration, and commerce without reliance on big tech. Your computer becomes part of a global network where apps are unstoppable, interoperable, and built on open protocols.

Freenet is an established decentralized network that prioritizes user control and censorship resistance. Its architecture makes it difficult for malicious actors to disrupt the network, and it is designed specifically to protect the communications and data it hosts.
