Tor is free portable software and an open network that helps you defend against a form of network surveillance that threatens personal freedom and privacy, confidential business activities and relationships, and state security known as traffic analysis.
Tor protects you by bouncing your communications around a distributed network of relays run by volunteers all around the world: it prevents somebody watching your Internet connection from learning what sites you visit, and it prevents the sites you visit from learning your physical location. Tor works with many of your existing applications, including web browsers, instant messaging clients, remote login, and other applications based on the TCP protocol.

Ok- I admit I didnt know what I meant by that title- but TOR is amazing. However- recent security news suggests that the 'governments' are able to access some of it or something and it is not completely anonymous (not surprise here) but the browser bundle is ( I am confused now). I heard that Tails might also been compromised. Oh well. I have implemented scripts that toggles on/off of TOR after a 'x' number of seconds. This will also change the IP address so I guess this increases the anonymity for a bit.
Tor is still one of the best anonymity tools in existence to date, provided that you use it correctly. It disguises your identity by bouncing your web traffic through a large series of nodes and relays.
There is one thing I must point out, however - a lot of the comments here are saying that Tor "is for accessing the dark web." That's not quite correct - what people are talking about are Tor hidden services (.onion sites) - these are merely hosted on Tor. You can use Tor for accessing the clearnet anonymously without ever visiting an onion site.
Tor does have some security flaws, but if you keep it updated and follow the documentation, you're in pretty good hands.

It just works! I always use it when I need to hire a hitman.
I see 2 advantages and one disadvantage:
(A) The Tor Browser Bundle lets you use Tor on Windows without needing to install any software. It can run off a USB flash drive, comes with a pre-configured Firefox web browser and is self contained. If you would prefer to use your existing web browser, install Tor permanently. More information for very quick installation of the bundle inluding Vidalia see: https://www.torproject.org/torbrowser/index.html.en
(B) I like the multi language user interface and support, e.g. german language is supported.
Disadvantage: surfing about TOR is very slow, but You can surf in a distributed, anonymous network.
It's probably worth noting that Tor will be seriously annoying if you don't understand the implications of using it beforehand. As said on their site, Tor doesn't allow you to watch Youtube or accept any cookies, both of which can track you (it doesn't matter whether they actually do). Personally, I wouldn't use it unless I had a really good reason to.
