  • LilyPond

    Free Mac Windows Linux Website

GNU LilyPond is a computer program for music engraving. One of LilyPonds major goals is to produce scores that are engraved with traditional layout rules, reflecting the era when scores were engraved by hand. It uses a simple text notation for music input, which LilyPond interprets and processes in a series of stages. In the final stage, music notation is output to PDF (via PostScript) or other graphical formats, such as SVG or PNG. LilyPond also has the facility to generate MIDI files that correspond to the music notation output.

LilyPond is a text-based application, so it does not contain its own graphical user interface to assist with score creation. It does, however, have a flexible input language that strives to be simple, easing the learning curve for new users. LilyPond adheres to the WYSIWYM paradigm; the workflow for typesetting music notation with LilyPond is similar to that of preparing documents with LaTeX.

LilyPonds primary goal is to produce output comparable to professionally-engraved scores instead of output that looks mechanical and computer-generated

  • music21

    Free Mac Windows Linux Website

    Music21 is a Python-based toolkit for computer-aided musicology.
Applications of this toolkit include computational musicology, music informations, musical example extraction and generation, music notation editing and scripting, and a wide variety of approaches to composition, both algorithmic and directly specified.

Although computers have transformed how we listen to, obtain, compose, and notate music, they have not fundamentally changed how we research and analyze music. Though many computer databases have been created for musicology, they are not well adapted for sophisticated music queries. For instance, melodies can be found if exact matches exist.

The music21 project at M.I.T. will give to the music community the set of tools it needs to conduct sophisticated musical and statistical analysis using modern programming techniques. The software framework, written in Python, manipulates music as a collection of symbolic data, such as pitch names and note durations, that can then be classified as higher level musical structures according to the style, region, or period being studied.

Music21 focuses specifically on the manipulation of symbolic music data: it leaves to the many preexisting open-source and proprietary software packages the notation and audio playback of scores (the two areas where computer-aided music research is most developed). By focusing on the points of greatest need to musicology, the framework will give rapid results within a short timeframe.

  • yoshimi

    Free Linux Website

Yoshimi is a software synthesizer for Linux based on the 2.4.0 release of ZynAddSubFX, written by Nasca Octavian Paul. Yoshimi delivers the same synth capabilities, along with very good Jack and Alsa midi/audio functionality.

I've been a ZynAddSubFX lover pretty much since it was first offered. Sadly though, Zyn has long been a case of flawed genius. It's audio and midi capabilities have not kept pace with the evolution and infrastructure improvements of Linux audio.

Performance with Jack was poor. Of recent years I've become more demanding in that respect, so I started looking at the code. I tried working with the official project team, but it proved impossible. We have vastly different and somewhat incompatible design, development and performance philosphies.

And so Yoshimi came to be, as a Linux only derivative of ZynAddSubFX. Yoshi attempts to do everything original Zyn does, but to do it well on Linux. A number of people have given time and energy to bring Yoshimi to life (and keep it that way!). My thanks go to you all.
