Initially, the program was created as a companion to https://alternativeto.net/software/far-manager/ .

Today, ConEmu can be used with any other console application or simple GUI tools (like https://alternativeto.net/software/putty/ for example). ConEmu is an active project, open to suggestions. 

ConEmu starts a console program in hidden console window and provides an alternative customizable GUI window with various features:

- smooth and friendly window resizing;
- tabs for editors, viewers, panels and consoles;
- run simple GUI apps in tabs;
- Windows 7 Jump Lists and Progress on Taskbar buttons;
- easily run old DOS applications (games) in Windows 7 or 64-bit OS;
- thumbnails and tiles in Far Manager;
- normal, maximized and full screen graphical window modes;
- customizable window fonts;
- using 24-bit colors in Far Manager 3.x;
- ANSI X3.64 and Xterm 256 colors;
- cursor: standard console (horizontal) or GUI (vertical);
- optional per-application settings (e.g. palette);
- vertical console buffer scrolling using the keyboard (BufferHeight mode);
- show full output (1K+ lines) of last command in Far Manager&#39;s editor/viewer;
- customizable Far Manager right click behaviour (long click opens context menu);
- drag and drop (explorer style) of files and folders in Far Manager;
- limited support of BDF fonts;
- user friendly text and block selection;
- transparency and desktop mode;
- customizable starting tabs;
- configurable and clickable status bar;

All settings are read from the registry (multiple named configurations are supported), after which the command line parameters are applied. Parameters /Config and /BufferHeight can only be specified on the command line. Most settings are configured using the Settings dialog, not from the command line.

Windows Terminal is a new, modern, feature-rich, productive terminal application for command-line users. It includes many of the features most frequently requested by the Windows command-line community including support for tabs, rich text, globalization, configurability, theming &amp; styling, and more.

The Terminal will also need to meet our goals and measures to ensure it remains fast, and efficient, and doesn&#39;t consume vast amounts of memory or power.

The Windows console host, conhost.exe, is Windows&#39; original command-line user experience. It implements Windows&#39; command-line infrastructure, and is responsible for hosting the Windows Console API, input engine, rendering engine, and user preferences. The console host code in this repository is the actual source from which the conhost.exe in Windows itself is built.

Console&#39;s primary goal is to remain backwards-compatible with existing console subsystem applications.

Since assuming ownership of the Windows command-line in 2014, the team has added several new features to the Console, including window transparency, line-based selection, support for ANSI / Virtual Terminal sequences, 24-bit color, a Pseudoconsole (&quot;ConPTY&quot;), and more.

However, because the Console&#39;s primary goal is to maintain backward compatibility, we&#39;ve been unable to add many of the features the community has been asking for, and which we&#39;ve been wanting to add for the last several years--like tabs!

These limitations led us to create the new Windows Terminal.

While overhauling the Console, we&#39;ve modernized its codebase considerably. We&#39;ve cleanly separated logical entities into modules and classes, introduced some key extensibility points, replaced several old, home-grown collections and containers with safer, more efficient STL containers, and made the code simpler and safer by using Microsoft&#39;s WIL header library.
