There is very little, if anything at all, that Zabbix can't do in the field of monitoring. But it comes with the price of a somewhat steep learning curve and setup for more advanced situations.

I started using the Debian package without literally any background knowledge, apart from friends telling "Yeah Zabbix is the best". I've now 200 servers monitored and, well, Zabbix IS the best. I tried to donate and they said "nah, just share a review" and this is my review.

Zabbix Agents, Zabbix Proxy, Zabbix Java Gateway, Zabbix Server, Zabbix Frontend. Every piece is well self-documented. Where this is not enough, the online documentation covers everything. Thanks Zabbix. You saved my beloved organizations.

Zabbix is a free and open source network monitoring solution with devices auto registration and SNMP profile auto-detection.

It can monitor:

  • switches with IPMI or SNMP
  • Windows, macOS & Linux hosts with an open-source agent.
  • services (Apache, *SQL, etc.)
  • VMWare ESXi via API.
  • Veeam via API.
  • Websites (with a complex configuration).

Its drawbacks are:

  • a steep learning curve for advanced features,
  • a default configuration more adapted to a datacenter than to a small business (generating a lot of alerts needing to be disabled)
  • a lack of preconfigured or auto-discovered usable dashboards (there is one).

Zabbix doesn't support network flow monitoring using sFlow.

It does it work, but if one is not willing to use the API or it is not able to put everything under templates, it requires a lot of clicks to configure everything.

After 2010 every tool about management of systems should come with an infrastructure as a code approach. Zabbix (as of version 4) doesn't really have it unless one goes with the API.

Very steep learning curve but the possibilities are endless when you know what you do. Especially since it's 100% open source. No features that are reserved for "enterprise editions" only.

Pros: Clean interface, powerful features, and the current packaged version actually installs and runs without problems.

Cons: Documentation not up to date with current stable. Many of the 3rd party zabbix-"plugins" are shitty hacks.

Its an open source tool, very flexible and robust.

What is Zabbix?

An uncompromising mature enterprise-level platform designed for real-time monitoring of millions of metrics collected from tens of thousands of servers, virtual machines and network devices, effortlessly scaling to even larger environments.

Gather and analyze accurate statistics and performance metrics, visualize it, get notified about current and potential issues without delay, and take advantage of our time-tested professional development and support.

Along with storing the data, visualization features are available (overviews, maps, graphs, screens, etc), as well as very flexible ways of analyzing the data for the purpose of alerting.

Thresholds of acceptable limits for incoming data can be set. As soon as those thresholds are surpassed, Zabbix can deliver e-mail notifications informing network administrators about the current or a potential problem.

Zabbix offers great performance for data gathering and can be scaled to very large environments. Distributed monitoring options are available with the use of Zabbix proxies. Zabbix comes with a web-based interface, secure user authentication and a flexible user permission schema. Polling and trapping is supported, with native high performance agents gathering data from virtually any popular operating system; agent-less monitoring methods are available as well.

Web monitoring as well as monitoring of WMware virtual machines is possible with Zabbix. Zabbix can automatically discover network servers and devices, as well as perform low-level discovery with methods of automatically assigning performance and availability checks to discovered entities.

There are many reasons to choose the Zabbix solution over its competitors. The best way to make sure it is the #1 choice for your organization is to give it a try
