What is Wardoff?

Wardoff is a free and open-source Windows utility designed to help protect a PC from unwanted shutdowns, reboots, sleep, and hibernation. It runs in the system tray with a simple Block/Allow state and combines several Windows-native protection mechanisms. In Block mode, Wardoff can:

  • block normal interactive shutdown and sign-out requests;
  • keep the system and display awake;
  • protect against certain Windows Update reboot scenarios;
  • attempt to abort shutdowns when Windows still provides an opportunity to do so. Wardoff also provides a command-line interface for scripting and automation, structured rotating JSONL logs, autostart support, and runtime status reporting. The project is designed around transparency. Wardoff documents which shutdown scenarios it can protect against and does not claim to block cases that Windows user-space applications cannot reliably prevent, such as a forced zero-second local shutdown. Wardoff is written in Rust, licensed under the MIT License, and supports Windows 10 and Windows 11.
