You need to press "f" to see the Vim keys. Vim Keys can be a great help, but they don't typically give full functionality. Like other typical Vim Key programs, Vimium does not capture hover-over links/buttons that standard mouse use would. For instance, many websites use what are called "modular tabs", tabs within the site. The modular tab window may be collapsed like a standard window, and the "x" box to close it may be hover-over and not get its own Vim Key. If the Vim Key is entered, the tag will open the tab, but there is no way to close this tab. One could open the tab and use the "x" shortcut to close it, but that may close the entire website, which may not be the action wanted.
Agree, typing f every time and then inability to click some of the elements is the reason we built a BrowseCut chrome extension at https://chromewebstore.google.com/detail/browsecut-use-keyboard-fo/hlpldbkfkpipgjjhalagekfkmgfdaeif.
