What is TerminalLynx?

TerminalLynx is a local-first, cross-platform SSH connection manager for Windows, macOS, and Linux built with Rust and Tauri. It is designed to provide cloud features—such as multi-device synchronization and shared team workspaces—without relying on a cloud backend or storing server inventories and credentials on third-party servers.

Instead of requiring a user account or a central server, TerminalLynx stores all connection data locally on each device and protects identity keys in the native OS keychain (with optional Argon2id master-password encryption). Devices pair using a one-time code and synchronize directly peer-to-peer over QUIC (iroh) using Ed25519 device identities. It discovers peers automatically on the local network via mDNS and also works across networks over Tailscale, WireGuard, or direct IP/DNS addresses. Offline edits are tracked with Hybrid Logical Clocks (HLC) and merged field-by-field so concurrent changes on different machines do not overwrite each other.

Key features:

  • Embedded SSH terminal (powered by russh and xterm.js) alongside one-click launch into native system terminals
  • Built-in SFTP file browser and transfer manager reusing the active SSH connection
  • Local (-L), remote (-R), and dynamic SOCKS5 (-D) port forwarding and multi-hop ProxyJump chains
  • Key:value tagging (such as env:prod or role:db) with dynamic group-by views, Smart Views, and a Ctrl/Cmd+K command palette
  • Serverless shared team workspaces with role-based access control (Admin, Editor, Reader), team-shared known_hosts verification, and automatic vault key rotation upon member removal
  • Zero telemetry, offline-verified Ed25519 license certificates, and opt-in update checks
