Better community of alternative music fans.
the userbase is amazing. when you can't find what you're looking for on your torrent sites, you'll get it here for sure.
avoid this centralized proprietary network at all costs
After two years this comment is still here - and we never got to know why one should avoid it "at all costs". Sounds really... naive? Let's look at some facts. Soulseek is an old, straightforward network, which runs fully on donation system. It doesn't contain any advertisement and functions which could implicate the gathering of user data - you don't need even an e-mail to register, so if you're effectively masking your IP (what you should do ALWAYS when using this kind of networks) - there's nothing to fear. Also because this network is not on any radar. Mostly you find there an old/alternative music gems for freaks, not the newest Marvel movies. The server is used for group messaging and search queries - everything is P2P there. And you have many open-source client for this.
Last thing, important. Not everything what's "propertiary" it's hundred percent bad. There's a lot of "open-source" products with much more aggressive financial model than Soulseek, oh boy! This network is simple, works stable from 20 years (!) and actually is community-driven from the beginning. Show me 20yo network which is open-source. It's really only up to YOU how you will use this network. Please - don't make a religion from open-source, because it not equals security. Don't make a "fancy fashion" from it, learn and be smart.

I love you so much.
I've been using it for over a decade. The value of the musical culture this software has exposed me to (and now my family and friends) is incalculable. If you care to reward artists for their brilliance you can in the traditional style - buy their music; your conscience should inform you of that! Invaluable tool for the discovery of artists and styles
I'm surprised by the amount of reviews on this app. If you are even mildly into music, this application is extremely handy. I have been using it for going on 15 years. I would go into details but you should see for yourself what this program provides and the vast community that uses it.
What makes Soulseek one of the best and longest surviving music sharing apps/networks is its users and their often incredible music shares. The Soulseek client itself may have an interface/design that ranges from merely average to downright clunky and the servers that the Soulseek network runs on have always had reliability issues, but the massive and highly diverse quantity of music that's available on the network more than makes up for the shortcomings of the client. To the point that it makes Napster in its glory days seem like a minor footnote in the history of music filesharing.
