What is Sombrero File Search?
Sombrero File Search is a native Linux file search tool built for people who miss Agent Ransack / FileLocator from Windows. It searches file names and file contents live, with boolean expressions, across many disks — no indexing daemon, no background service, no waiting for a database to build. Search starts instantly and results stream in as they're found.
It includes document content search (PDF, ODF, and more via ripgrep + fd under the hood), a duplicate finder that is strictly non-destructive (it only finds and lists — it will never delete files), and both a GUI (PySide6) and a CLI. The installer runs cleanly on traditional distros and on immutable/atomic systems (Fedora Atomic, Bazzite, SteamOS-style setups) without root and without layering.
Built by a physician in Brazil to search through more than a decade of medical records spread across 13 disks — open source, GPL licensed.
