Soft-Machine

Persistent, shareable cloud workspaces combine an i3-style browser layout with editor, terminal, chat, files, browser and canvas panels. Attach CPU, GPU or personal Linux machines, run coding agents, coordinate sessions, search history, and extend teams with plugins.

What is Soft-Machine?

Soft-Machine is a cloud-based development environment for team collaborations. It offers project visibility and manages multiple agents simultaneously. Each project gets a shareable workspace with an editor, terminal, chat, files, browser, and canvas panels. These workspaces run on a custom Linux distribution, enabling networking and chat data sharing.

Workspaces can be linked to a dedicated Linux machine, hosted CPU machines, GPU machines, or user-owned hardware. These machines come with a persistent disk, private forwarded URLs, and cloning capabilities for parallel experimentation.

Agents like Claude Code and Codex operate natively, with full access to tools. An integrated agent daemon manages scheduling and coordination. Workspaces are structured in a tree format, with all messages, file revisions, and agent actions logged and searchable.

Soft-Machine also serves as a developer intelligence layer, offering text, regex, and semantic search capabilities. Teammates and agents can locate a specific piece of code and its rationale with a single query, without additional documentation.

The system incorporates a plugin system for panels, commands, themes, and services. Third-party API keys are securely stored server-side, enabling agents to use connected services without accessing the keys. The keys can also be securely shared within an organization.
