What is Slate Terminal?

Slate Terminal is a native Mac terminal powered by libghostty. It brings shells, browser panes and your own small tools into one workspace.

Arrange terminals, browsers and custom panels in tabs and split panes. Plugins use HTML, CSS and JavaScript, and can add panels, commands and background services. Write them yourself or ask a coding agent such as Claude Code or Codex to build them.

Give a shell script a simple interface, keep notes beside a browser, or build a dashboard for your project. Slate’s CLI lets agents open panels and work with the workspace, and an activity indicator shows which pane an agent is using.

Save an arrangement as a layout and reopen it from Spotlight or the Dock. You choose the agent and model you use.

Slate is free and open source under GPL-3.0-or-later. It requires macOS 27 or later and Apple silicon, and is actively in development. The showcase video illustrates panels you can build; those example tools are not bundled with Slate.
