Comments and Reviews

Comment summary: Searx is praised for being an open-source meta search engine that prioritizes privacy by aggregating results from multiple search engines without creating user profiles. Users highlight its flexibility in choosing which search engines to pull from and the ability to host personal instances. However, concerns are noted about unofficial instances, cert issues, and limitations with image searches, requiring users to verify official sources and consider alternatives for specific search needs.

A great open-source project for search engines. It can pull results from many other search engines, and you can choose which ones you want results from. It doesn't make a personal profile of you, either, so although this may come at a cost of lack of personalized search results, it can't be used to track you. For the privacy-conscious, this is a good tool.

If you so desire, you can host your own instance as well.

It would be great to instal it. Unfortunately it requires Python

I had to use Google Search to understand how to install this properly. Wasted a lot of time to get the same usual results I can get from any other engine.

Review from a new or low-activity account — shown here, but not counted in the app rating.

Metasearch engines like SearX is the best. Rate-limiting is one of the only issues, but you have a lot of instances to choose from anyways.

This search engine is open source and aggregates results from many different search engines including Google, Bing, and Mojeek. Many instances don't even work and image results are terrible no matter what instance you use. A good searx instance such as this one is probably the best choice as of now. For images, just use something else (Startpage?).

What is Searx?

Searx is a free internet metasearch engine which aggregates results from more than 70 search services. Users are neither tracked nor profiled. Additionally, searx can be used over Tor for online anonymity.

Why use Searx?

  • Searx may not offer you as personalised results as Google, but it doesn't generate a profile about you
  • Searx doesn't care about what you search for, never shares anything with a third party, and it can't be used to compromise you
  • Searx is free software, the code is 100% open and you can help to make it better. See more on GitHub

If you do care about privacy, want to be a conscious user, or otherwise believe in digital freedom, make Searx your default search engine or run it on your own server

Technical details - How does it work?

Searx is a metasearch engine, inspired by the seeks project. It provides basic privacy by mixing your queries with searches on other platforms without storing search data. Queries are made using a POST request on every browser (except chrome*). Therefore they show up in neither our logs, nor your URL history. In case of Chrome* users there is an exception, Searx uses the search bar to perform GET requests. Searx can be added to your browser's search bar; moreover, it can be set as the default search engine.
