The time consuming part of reading lies mainly in the actual eye movements from word to word and sentence to sentence. In addition, traditional reading simply takes up a lot of physical space. Spritz solves both of these problems. First, your eyes do not have to move from word to word or around the page that you’re reading. In fact, there’s no longer a page – with Spritz you only need 13 total characters to show all of your content.

    • Even though it is 10 years old, I have yet to find a free, stand-alone RSVP program as good at this one. Its best features are that it is highly customizable, user friendly, and efficient. I use it every day for countless reading tasks. Still, it's not quite perfect. Since it's open source, I hope one day a programmer will make it even better (e.g. better handling of new sentences and paragraphs, and highlighted "focus" letters as can be found in Reedy and other newer programs). • Speed Reader

Speed Reader uses a method called Rapid Serial Visual Presentation to allow you to read faster by eliminating the time spent in moving your eyes between words. Watch the center of the screen, do not move your eyes, and try not to "subvocalize," or say the words in your head. Do not listen to music or attempt to multitask while using SpeedReader. If you find it very easy to read and absorb every word, consider increasing the speed. With practice, speeds of 600 wpm are not uncommon.
