RealTerm Alternatives
RealTerm is described as 'terminal program specially designed for capturing, controlling and debugging binary and other difficult data streams. It is far better for debugging comms than HyperTerminal. It has no support for dialing modems, BBS, etc. - that is what HyperTerminal does' and is a Terminal Emulator in the OS & Utilities category. There are more than 10 alternatives to RealTerm for Windows, Linux, Mac and FreeBSD. The best alternative is YAT - Yet Another Terminal, which is both free and Open Source. Other great apps like RealTerm are Tera Term (Free, Open Source), CuteCom (Free, Open Source), HTerm (Free) and GtkTerm (Free, Open Source).
- Engineering, testing and debugging of serial communication. Supports RS-232/422/423/485 as well as TCP/IP Client/Server/AutoSocket, UDP/IP Client/Server/PairSocket and USB Ser/HID. Optimized for simple command sets of e.g. embedded systems.
YAT - Yet Another Terminal vs RealTerm opinions
YAT has allot of features that are good for Embedded Systems development. - Tera Term (Pro) is a free software terminal emulator (communication program) for MS-Windows. It supports VT100 emulation, telnet connection, serial port connection, and so on.
- CuteCom is a graphical serial terminal aimed mainly at hardware developers or other people who need a terminal to talk to their devices.
Discontinued
The project is no longer developed. Last version, 0.22.0, released in June 2009, can be still downloaded from the official website. It does not support terminal type emulation.

- Gtkterm is a simple GTK+ terminal used to communicate with a serial port.
- Hercules SETUP utility is a useful serial port terminal (RS-485 or RS-232), UDP/IP terminal and TCP/IP Client Server terminal. It was created for HW group internal use only, but today its includes many functions in one utility and its Freeware!
- HyperTerminal is a terminal emulator capable of connecting to systems through TCP/IP Networks, Dial-Up Modems, and COM ports. Until Windows XP, it is included with the operating system, but, starting from Windows Vista, it has to be bought separately. No screenshots yet
- The idea is to create a simple and good looking terminal for being able to transmit to and from electronic boards and hardware. It can be configured to show data in hex or string format. It allows manual configuration of the port to use.
- moserial is a clean, friendly gtk-based serial terminal for the GNOME desktop. It is primarily intended for technical users and hardware hackers who need to communicate with embedded systems, test equipment, and serial consoles.
